Chokwe-Lunda Kingdom

To seek a welcoming blessing here is to be met with a captivating question from the locals, Which king do you wish to encounter? 

There are two kings of the Chokwe in the city. Twenty kilometres north of the city in the settlement of Sueja, resides Alberto Ndvumba, known heraldically as Mwene Mwacisenge waTembo. Dressed in a brilliant blue-and-yellow tunic, holding a masterfully carved ceremonial staff, and wearing a traditional beaded hat. He welcomes guests not with stiff protocol, but with with songs and share stories with all his heart.

 Further north, towards the diamond-rich borders of Dundo  in Itengo, sits the second king, Carlos Manuel Muatxissenge Watembo.  Here, guests are held within the chota—a circular wooden gathering place sheltered beneath a thatched roof .

Wearing his pink traditional costume, he will greet you in the presence of village members. You will be shown two important places by the King: Ipanga, a small roofless enclosure where he can speak with the ancestors, and chiula, the large hut where he dispenses justice.
